Unfortunately I cant compare this one with the f hole one that has gotten all of the attention, ( Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin, Black) but most of the things people said about the other one seem to hold for this one as well. It has a Loud, Bright sound that very well approximates that of a "real" mandolin. And the finish is stunning, frankly, for a beginner instrument. Ours didn't have any problems with setup. The only drawbacks are that the tuners are cheap and there's no truss rod. Maybe this isn't a proffessional instrument but it's the best value I can imagine. a Perfect starter instrument.
This holder works well with all of the different harmonicas that I own. Including some Honer, both diatonic and chromatic. I like its ability to adjust. If you buy one,make sure to set it just a little closer than a comfortable reach. When you go to play it will settle down a little.

Because of the two discouraging reviews for the jaw-harp that are here I thought I should share my own experience with learning the jaw harp and how much fun it has been to be able to play it.
I got my jaw harp several years ago as a Christmas present and just gave my mom a look like "What is this supposed to do?" Of course, neither of us, or my brother and dad, could play it, but we could hear the vibrations of the jaw harp resonating in our heads. So for about 3 maybe 4 months I practiced and practiced and still couldn't get any audible sound out of it. So I put it somewhere for later, probably a box and soon lost it.
About a year later going through old belongings and deciding what to throw away I came across my jaw harp and decided to give it another go. And that time it sounded different. So I run into the other room and get someone to confirm that it is making actual noise instead of me just hearing things in my head. And it really was making sound! After that I would carry it around everywhere both as something to do when bored and as an ice-breaker when I'm meeting people (this has been very useful in college).
During high school I finally decided that there has to be more to do with a jaw harp than just these basic sounds I can produce. So I looked up the jaw harp online and tried to find something else to do. I then discovered that you can say the vowels a-e-i-o-u, this IS NOT just talking out the vowels while playing. I don't know exactly how it works but if you can play the jaw harp already it is the easiest thing to learn, just don't talk! From there you can start to talk, just watch out for words that make your tongue move toward the metal reed (words with "s" in them especially).
Since coming to college I really wanted to know whether or not the jaw harp could be played in song or orchestra. I do know that several bands have used it but the most significant thing I have found is that Johann Georg Albrechstberger produced 7 concertos for the jaw harp. This is a great thing to learn to play but don't be discouraged by the initial lack of sound. If you keep at it you'll be playing a year sooner than I was.
This drum was purchased for my grandson who was 9 months old at the time. We were searching for rhythm instruments that would be safe for a young child. This drum and mallet were the perfect size to be manageable for him, and produced a very pleasant sound as well. He just celebrated his first birthday, and this instrument (I don't even think of it as a toy) continues to be a favorite. He uses the mallet on other potential "drums" (plastic coffee cannister, small aluminum bowl, etc.) as well as the actual drum. I am very pleased that we found this.
Although I have mainly played diatonics, I like having a full three octaves. The quality is pretty good for the price.
A large Uke is a more `honest' and better sounding instrument than most small `traveling' guitars.

Having sought out, tried and reviewed small guitars for travelling and teaching small people to play, I have recently discovered the absolute pleasure, ease and joy of the ukulele - Particularly the largest of them, the Baritone.
Unlike the several smaller versions of this instrument ( the Soprano, Concert and Tenor varieties) the Baritone Uke is tuned to what we call Concert Pitch - just like the highest pitch four strings on a guitar tuned to standard tuning. Thus, unlike its smaller versions, the Baritone is chorded just like the top four strings on most guitars and is automatically easier to play because no new fingering chord positions are necessary to learn.

The Lanikai LU-21B is the entry level of Lanikai's thorough and varied line of baritone ukuleles and retails for about 0. Made of "Nato", a type of light, resonant wood - NOT a type of Rosewood as is frequently and mistakenly advertised- with a smooth, level and narrow rosewood fretboard.
The Nato is as light in weight as mahogany but has the appearance and a similar rich resonance to rosewood.
This ukulele gives off a sound of a full sized ukulele rather than the tinny guitar `approximations' of even the better ½ and ¾ size `traveling' guitars, the best known of which are probably the Baby Taylor and the Little Martin. The LU-21B is easy to handle, easy to fret and play and as easy to travel with as tossing it (in a case of course) into the overhead bin on an airplane.
The ukulele, most commonly associated with Hawaii and Hawaiian music, has actually been popular around the world for many years. Modern composers as diverse as Rick Nelson and George Harrison worked out initial versions of some of their most well known songs on the ukulele. The real beauty of this Baritone Lanikai is that it does not sound like a small guitar but like what it is, a full size ukulele!
A particular noon to people with small fingers for whom fretting a full size guitar fretboard is a stretch, the Lanikai Baritone LU-21B Ukulele is a simple and stress-free pleasure. The tomes are rich and light hearted. It can be finger or flat picked while some enjoy simply brushing the strings with the tips of their fingers. Hawaiian music does sound the most indigenous on it, but it will perform and sound nicely with whatever you choose to play.
The specs are not terribly complex. The Model LU-21B sports a scale length (the length of the fingerboard) of 20.375 inches, has a nut width (the width at the tuner end of the neck,) of a mere 1.5 inches and is made, as mentioned, of Nato wood. It has a particularly smooth and comfortable Rosewood fretboard, good quality die-cast tuning machines and has 18 frets, all of which are true and playable all the way up the neck! The tuning machines are sealed Grover-style and hold the tuning quite nicely. The binding is simple white plastic and the fret bars are a high quality steel that are apt to last a player's lifetime never needing to be replaced. It is also available in a model set up with electronic pickups, the LU-21BE for a bit more money. There are simple single pearl dot inlays in the 5th, 7th, 10th and 12th frets. There is no pick guard, nor is one usually necessary or recommended.
A unique serial number is found on the interior of the body at the base of the neck. Each instrument is paper labeled with the model number. They are fully registerable and are warranted (by their distributor in the US, Hohner) for the life of the original owner against any defects in materials or workmanship and for one year for any included electronics for models that include them. The LU-21B has none.
This Lanikai LU-21B comes set up with Aquila strings set for guitar tuning (from lightest to heaviest, E,B,G and D.) The type designation is called "ABGT." These strings, made in Italy, are made of a synthetic gut-like product (called Nylgut) and are made with wound metal on the outer surfaces of the heavier two strings. All four strings yield a rich, warm and truly gut-like sound. They last a lot longer than old fashion gut strings, are considerably less expensive and sound fully comparable.
With the growing popularity of small, traveling guitars, this instrument is at risk of being overlooked in the shuffle and, having played one now for several months, I believe that would be a terrible shame. Ukuleles are versatile, easy to play and complete and whole as they are. The Lanikai LU-21B is not a downsized version of anything else - It is a complete ukulele in its very largest standard incarnation.
Before putting out - 0 for a very small, somewhat tinny sounding guitar - even one from a major manufacturer, give the Lanikai LU-21B ukulele a try. I expect you will be surprised and delighted. It doesn't need to be on a beach in Hawaii to sound good. It sounds good anywhere and can be used to play just about anything you can play on a full-size six-string guitar.
Hohner Special 20 harps are the best sounding harps that you can buy. Easy to bend reeds and hit single notes. Only drawback is that they don't last forever. Eventually a reed goes bad and you have to replace the harp. Some of the other harps (like Lee Oskar) are more durable, but not as easy to play.
Various forms of shakers and rattles are found in virtually every culture throughout history. They can be used effectively in many different styles of music. This set of wooden egg-shaped instruments is filled with small pellets to produce a sound when shaken.

This didge is made of PVC rather than wood (eucalyptus, bamboo, etc.) but still has a quite decent tone. It seems to excel in ease of playing, so would be particulary good for a beginner. Its handpainted and decorated. It has a slight bend in the middle and flare at the tip -- lending kind of a whimsical style. It has a soft rubber mouthpiece that is comfortable; should work easily with smaller mouths. No beeswax needed unless desired or allergic to latex.
Besides producing a quirky, but relaxing and surprisingly pleasant drone -- playing a didge might actually improve the quality of your health and lengthen your life. (Just do a google search for the British Medical Journal, sleep apnea, randomized trial, didgeridoo). If you want to explore what didge playing might do for you, this model is an excellent value, lightweight and carries a quite decent sound.
Sleep apnea, or pauses in breathing during your sleep, IS dangerous. These pauses means less oxygen to vital organs and an accumulation of carbon dioxide which can make you drowsy and confused the next day. It can be a silent force that imperils kidneys, hearts, lungs, raises blood pressure and even makes the effort to lose weight much tougher.
Unfortunately media reports and some sleep centers have insufficiently communicated the full range of dangers associated with sleep apnea. People walk away thinking that the biggest threat is a little lost sleep and being drowsy during the daytime. Unfortunately, these are only the tip of the iceberg and sail by unnoticed. The organ damage is more subtle, sometimes even silent until relatively advanced. For the person with sleep apnea, its really a question of whether they are sleeping safely. Answer: not very, when the airway is intermittently obstructed.
All too often after a few discouraging attempts to wear a CPAP or BiPAP device mask, and feeling claustrophobic or that it actually disturbs sleep that otherwise at least "seemed" normal to them, many of my patients unfortunately just give up trying. Despite trying different masks there remains a substantial number of people, way too many in fact, who can only make it part way through the night with their mask or not at all. We talk for years about the necessity of dealing with sleep apnea, but some of them only are able to press themselves to endure CPAP/BiPAP devices after they have finally suffered significant, perhaps irreversible organ damage or other health consequences of the sleep apnea.
Hence, didgeridoos are an attractive, low risk, frankly fun way to supplement the management of sleep apnea along with positive-pressure airway devices. Obviously, one should speak with their physician, consider adding the didge concurrently with CPAP/BiPAP if diagnosed with more than moderate apnea, and for best results repeat the sleep study after a few months (4 in the BMJ article) of didge training to confirm it is working. Frequently persons being treated should have routine sleep testing yearly to make sure their mask is still working -- the same might also be advisable for the didge strategy. Your primary physician and/or pulmunologist should be consulted for your specific needs.
Participants in the BMJ study learned the circular breathing technique as part of the basic technique for conditioning airway tone and "practiced" about 30 minutes a day, 5-6 days per week. One should probably expect to maintain playing the didge for life -- though duration of benefit among those who later quit was not studied. As far as we know, wearing CPAP/BiPAP doesn't really condition the airway musculature. The user remains dependent on their machine so that if they fall asleep in the daytime while watching TV or accidently knock the mask off at night -- they are sadly unprotected. Thus a wonderful benefit of didge training is that it does condition the airway and could assist in bridging the gap through these accidental mask-off times.
Specifics for this PVC Didge:
I've personally owned 5 didges. This one is middle of the range in quality, very solid value, very easy to use and one of the least expensive so far. This one does come with a separate mouthpiece (included) that does not need to be maintained like beeswax ones do. The rubber mouthpiece should remain comfortable after 30-60 minutes of playing. If preferred, a beeswax mouthpiece could be substituted. The interested user can purchase beeswax many places but here is one option that provides enough to last a lifetime or to make a matching candle for ambience :-) BEESWAX BLOCK YELLOW 1-LB . There are several websites with instructions on how to fashion the wax mouthpiece -- a fairly simple task.
This didge is constructed from a single piece of PVC pipe, flared at the end. It is very lightweight, about 1/8 inch thick. There are two slight bends midway down its shaft which actually seems to make it a little more responsive to vibration than other straight PVC models I have used. Internal diameter is about 1 3/8 inch until reaching the flared bell. The tone is fairly rich, but not quite as much as for a didge made of natural materials such as bamboo. However, the feel and sound are pleasurable (mine is tuned to D, just about 2 octaves below middle C). It is nicely responsive to variations in breath or lip technique. Its very easy to "sing" into and produce animal sounds.
The painted design is simple and I suspect may wear off. I would NOT leave it outside or allow it to bounce around in the car or truck if the goal is to preserve the paint. However, PVC/acrylic models are pretty durable and if exposured to younger children, travel, rough use and storage conditions -- it wouldn't lose much in sound. That could be a plus!

I like the mouthpiece of the Suzuki -- it seems easy to get a good seal and move up and down the harmonica. The unit seems quite tight (a little bit of air goes a long way). It's a little lighter feeling than some of my other harmonicas.
